Eleven people were wounded Sunday in a pair of drive-by shootings in the Denver area that happened just hours and miles apart.

The first shooting happened about 4:30 p.m. in Byers and Pecos Park in Denver’s Valverde neighborhood. Nine people were shot during a family gathering.

All of the victims are expected to survive. Witnesses said they heard gunfire and then saw people running from the area.

A 10th person was hurt when they were struck by a car while trying to flee the gunfire.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock called the violence “unacceptable.”

“Our prayers and thoughts are with the injured,” he said in a statement. “No resource will be spared to find the responsible parties for this senseless and stupid act.”

The second shooting happened at about 10:39 p.m. in the 540 block of Sixth Avenue Frontage Road in Lakewood. Two men were wounded and taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

“Agents on scene learned that there were approximately 10-15 people at a house party when a dark-colored SUV drove by and fired several shots into a group of people,” Lakewood police said in a news release.

Lakewood police say they are aware of the Denver shooting earlier in the day, but that it’s “too early in the investigation to determine if the two are related.”

A swarm of emergency vehicles responded to the Lakewood shooting, their flashing lights illuminating the area.
