The Colorado hairstreak (Hypaurotis crysalus) butterfly is the state insect. It is is typically found in hills and canyons at elevations between 6,500 and 9,000 feet. The tiny insect has a wingspan of no more than about an inch and a half and its wings when open are iridescent purple, blue and black. Orange spots are visible when the wings are closed.
