Boulder police believe there is no longer a threat, after placing two schools on lockdown Thursday after receiving a phone call about a man with a gun near Fairview High School.

Officers made contact with the man who was reported as a possible suspect. He was wearing a weighted vest and carrying his cellphone in his hand, the department said in a social media post at about noon.

Fairview High School and Southern Mills Middle School were placed on lockdown after the call came in.

Boulder Valley School District spokesperson Randy Barber said the district is not considering the incident “an active threat.”

Someone in the neighborhood saw a person with a weighted vest on and carrying a cellphone, which appears to be the reason for the concern and the lockdowns, according to Barber.

“Out of an abundance of caution, they have continued on in clearing the school,” Barber said, noting that law enforcement is working to ensure Fairview High School and Southern Hills Middle School are cleared and safe.

In updating earlier information, Barber said Southern Hills Middle School will return to classes for the day after the school is cleared but if parents want to check their students out to go home, they can do that.

Other BVSD schools placed in “secure” mode will resume classes and continue operating as normal once law enforcement finishes clearing Fairview High School and Southern Hills Middle School.
