A shooting Friday morning at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs left two people dead in a dorm room.

Colorado Springs police said both deaths are being investigated as homicides and that detectives don’t believe the shooting was a murder-suicide.

Campus police officers found the bodies after responding about 6 a.m. to a call of shots fired, Colorado Spring Police Department said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. They found two people dead, each with at least one gunshot wound.

Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez declined to provide any further details on the shooting, including information on the shooter or the victims, during a news conference Friday afternoon. Neither Vasquez nor the 4th Judicial District Attorney Michael Allen answered questions from reporters after making brief, general remarks.

UCCS Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet called the shooting an isolated event.

“We are in shock as we process this tragic loss of two lives,” Sobanet said.

Colorado Springs police initially said they were on campus conducting a death investigation in an 8:15 a.m. post on X.

“We are in the very early stages of piecing together what happened,” police said on the social media platform.

“We are working diligently and looking at every possibility.”

Students living on campus in Alpine Village were instructed to shelter in place and not leave campus, university officials said in a safety alert. The shelter in place was lifted at 9:37 a.m.

“There is no safety concern on campus,” the university said in a safety alert sent at 8:52 a.m.
