The Garfield County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the 6-year-old girl who died at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park as Wongel Estifanos.
Wongel died Sunday after “an incident” while she was on the Haunted Mine Drop ride, according to the coroner’s office and the park. The forensic pathologist identified multiple blunt force injuries, according to the coroner’s office.
The coroner’s office said the girl’s final manner and cause of death will be released following a complete investigation.
The Haunted Mine Drop opened in July 2017 and had been inspected annually by contractors hired by the state. It was most recently inspected June 14, according to an inspection report from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. No violations were noted.
The ride drops six people 110 feet in two to three seconds, according to 9News.
According to the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park website, riders must be at least 46 inches tall — or just under 4 feet — to ride the Haunted Mine Drop. The coroner’s office declined to provide the girl’s height.
Most vertical drop rides are designed with shoulder harnesses, but the Haunted Mine Drop did not have that safety feature because the designer wanted to make it “more scary,” The Denver Post reported.
“Wongel was a beautiful, caring and cheerful girl who (loved) Jesus so much for a 6-year-old girl,” a family member wrote on the GoFundMe page for her family. “Her life was cut short in this tragic accident.”
