The Colorado River flows near Bond, Colorado. The river's headwaters are in western Colorado near Grand Lake. The river basin spans parts of seven western states, including Colorado. (Todd Winslow Pierce, Special to The Colorado Sun)

Hi, Colorado Sun community! As the Colorado River reporter for The Sun, I spend a lot of time thinking about our water supply and its future in the region. But I also think about how I can better answer questions for you, our readers.

The river has some big events happening this year. Early this spring, the seven basin states are expected to either come together with an agreement on how to manage the river’s water supply going forward — or leave it up to the feds or courts. By this fall, major reservoirs in the basin, and the river itself, will be under a new management paradigm.

What happens to the Colorado River can impact everything from peach farms on the Western Slope to school water fountains on the Front Range.

So what do you want to know? Maybe you keep seeing “Colorado River” in the news, but you’re not sure what the concern is. Maybe you don’t know whether you use water from the river, or you want to know how to best conserve water at home. You might keep hearing about these negotiations, but what the heck are they actually about?

I’m here to answer your top questions. Here’s one example, with more on the way: Data centers are coming to Colorado. Can the parched state handle their big water needs?

I might not get to all of them immediately, but I’ll do my best to give you answers in quick explainers, news stories or as part of the Colorado River Explained series. When it comes to something as important as water, it’s my job to help you make informed decisions and better understand how water really works in the West.
