Colorado sees a significant number of people moving out, but the state ultimately gains more residents than it loses through migration.
About 211,000 people left Colorado in 2023, making it 12th among states with the largest number of people moving elsewhere, the American Community Survey shows.
Despite those departures, Colorado had a net population increase of about 19,000 residents when counting new arrivals from other states and countries.
From July 2023 to last July, Colorado experienced a net population increase of nearly 39,000 people, 21st among states. Of the new arrivals, about 33,000 came from other countries and roughly 5,400 relocated from other states. In terms of international migrants, Colorado ranked 18th.
From April 2020 to July 2024, Colorado ranked 19th in net migration.
Florida saw the largest population increase from migration, with a net gain of 475,000 residents in 2024. Alaska had the smallest, gaining 255 residents.
