Colorado saw 68 victims of hate crimes who were targeted for their gender identity or sexual orientation in 2019. That number increased to 92 in 2021 and to 120 in 2023, state data shows. The victims included people identifying as gender nonconforming, transgender, bisexual, lesbian and gay.
A hate crime includes vandalism, threats and violent acts such as robberies, assaults and murders that were at least partially motivated by bias against a person’s race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender or gender identity.
Overall, hate crimes in Colorado decreased between 2022 and 2023, in line with decreases in violent and property crimes during the same period. Nationally, hate crimes against LGBTQ people rose to 2,965 in 2023 from 1,576 in 2019. Hate crimes motivated by sexual orientation and gender identity made up 18.4% and 4.1% of national hate crimes, respectively.
