Forensic investigators are collecting evidence near a remote camping area in Park County after human remains were found earlier this week, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation said Thursday.

Two hikers found the partial human remains near the Deer Creek Campground outside of Bailey on U.S. Forest Service land, a spokesperson for CBI said. Investigators are conducting a “meticulous examination” to help identify the person and gather details on what happened, the agency said.

“As with any death investigation, and certainly one discovered as human remains with some passage of time, we will investigate this in a manner consistent with suspected foul play, spokesman Rob Low said.

The Park County Sheriff’s Office received a report of possible human remains at the site May 28.

“As of now, information regarding the case is limited. Collaboratively, the Sheriff’s Office, the Coroner’s Office, and CBI are diligently working to unravel more details. Further updates will be provided as new information emerges,” CBI said.

Anyone with information about the case can contact CBI’s tip line at 720-295-6642.
