GYPSUM — A ninth grader from Eagle Valley High School died Wednesday after an altercation in a Gypsum park, officials from the Eagle County School District and sheriff’s office said.

Jackson Davis died of injuries sustained in the attack. Officials said a suspect was taken into custody shortly after the attack, which is being investigated as a homicide.

Deputies responded around 10 p.m. Wednesday to a disturbance at Second Street Park in Gypsum, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

There they learned multiple teenagers had been involved in an altercation and that during the incident, Davis was seriously injured. He was transported to an area hospital and later died.

In an email from Eagle County School District to parents, officials said other teens witnessed the events leading up to Davis’ death and that a recording of the alleged altercation was taken and shared on social media. The sheriff’s office did not have further information about the video or who took it or shared it.

The juvenile suspect had fled the scene prior to deputy’s arrival and the victim was taken to a hospital for life-saving treatment but later died.

School officials in the email directed students to contact Your Hope Center, a community mental health therapy network that connects individuals in need to immediate clinical support in the valley. The center works directly with schools including Eagle Valley High School. Officials said counselors are aware of the situation and support is available open to the entire community.

On Thursday, Olivia Hermosillo, Davis’ sister, set up a GoFundMe page on behalf of her mother. “My mother is a single parent and (Jackson’s) dad passed away late last year. Anything helps him. Please keep him in your prayers and thoughts,” she wrote.
