Public Lands in Colorado: Who Should Get to Use Them?

September 27, 2024 @ 10:15 am 11:15 am

A picnic table and fire pit sit in a grassy, mountainous Camp Hale landscape with overcast skies and mist covering part of the hills. Trees and shrubs are scattered across the foreground.

About half of Colorado is public lands and boy do they get used, between recreationists and hunters, oil developers and someone wanting to see a very specific type of bird. Societally these uses are valued differently and are being hotly contested amid drought, growing fires, expanding development and more humans.

This will be a philosophical conversation exploring what should be allowed on these lands, if one value supersedes the other and how the government is going to manage them as the world continues to change.

Colorado Sun Rural Reporter Tracy Ross will moderate.

Speakers include:

  • Jim Petterson, Trust for the Public Land Mountain West Region Vice President
  • Gary Moore, Colorado Mountain Bike Association Executive Director
  • Alicia Marrs, National Wildlife Federation’s Western Water Program Director
  • Bryan Jones, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Regional Policy Coordinator
  • Kathleen Sgamma, President of Western Energy Alliance
