Volunteer Opportunities
At a loss for where to volunteer for Make Colorado Shine? We asked Sun members where they like to lend a hand. This list is by no means comprehensive, just a starting point to help get your creative juices flowing on how you can help out your community.
Help parks, trails, gardens or the environment.
Grab some gloves and check out an organization that’s planting trees, rebuilding trails, cleaning up rivers, etc. Some examples are Wildlands Restoration Volunteers, Rocky Mountain Field Institute, Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, community gardens or a national, state or local park. (Heck, you can just pick up trash along the street.)
Help with food security.
There are hundreds of organizations tackling food insecurity across Colorado. Consider food banks, community kitchens and specialized organizations, such as SAME (So All May Eat) Cafe, Meals on Wheels and KidsPak.
Help animals.
It’s hard not to love our furry, feathery and scaly friends. Consider a place like the Colorado Pet Pantry, Mountain Valley Horse Rescue, Caring Canines or local chapters of the National Audubon Society.
Help our seniors or folks with end-of-life care.
Whether it’s helping older adults stay connected or companionship for grief support groups, there are plenty of opportunities. Consider services like North Fork Senior Connections and HopeWest.
Help with social services.
If there’s a cause you care about, there is likely someone in Colorado you can lend a hand to. Care about health? Think of places like Children Hospital of Colorado. Focused on housing? There’s Habitat for Humanity, Colorado Coalition for the Homeless or Partners in Housing. Deeply concerned about domestic violence? Consider an organization like TESSA. Looking for a catch-all? Check out places like Westside Cares.
Help your city or town.
Land your hand at a library, at a park or check your local government’s website for upcoming volunteering opportunities.
Help that quirky spot in town.
Whether it’s the Retread Threads, a nonprofit thrift store in Haxtun, or Green Chile Bike Bank, which recycles bikes in Pueblo, take the time to look around your town to see if any off-the-beaten path groups need your help.
A gift of time is precious, and helps well beyond the scope of volunteer hours. Service of any kind helps fill a need in our community and pays us back with a sense of joy and purpose. Thank you for taking part in our inaugural Make Colorado Shine day of service.
