A train derailment in Boulder late Thursday night injured two conductors and temporarily closed a section of Pearl Parkway, the Boulder Police Department said.
At first it was reported by police that two trains collided. Pearl Parkway was closed near 48th and Arapahoe, but it was reopened around 7 a.m. Friday, Boulder Police said. Initially there was concern that “some fuel” had leaked into Boulder Creek, but officials later said the fuel did not make it into the water.
“The train itself is about a mile-long so it will take some time to clean up and move the cars,” police said in a tweet Friday morning. Video from the scene shows most of the train cars are containers.
The collision occurred north of Boulder Community Hospital. The cause is being investigated.
Xcel Energy is working to fix the power line that was struck. Police said one rail bridge was destroyed in the crash, but no city property was damaged aside from some trees.
The conductors suffered minor injuries. BNSF Railway, which is the largest freight railroad in the United States, is leading the investigation and cleanup, police said.
