Colorado has housed and fed about 45,000 migrants from South America in the past year and a half, a huge effort that stretched resources thin and stoked a political debate about immigration policy and work authorization. 

While it was the biggest influx of new immigrants that Denver has ever experienced, the state has in years past welcomed and assimilated floods of immigrants from Afghanistan, Somalia and other African nations.

Sarah Plastino is the director of the City and County of Denver’s Newcomer Program. She was previously the senior staff attorney in the Detention Program of the Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network. Her practice focused on defense for indigent non-citizens detained in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and in proceedings before the Aurora Immigration Court.
