LITTLETON —The Littleton Police Department said it disabled a pipe bomb Tuesday afternoon outside the Safeway building at the corner of South Broadway and Mineral Avenue.

“The situation is safe at this time,” said police spokesperson Sheera Poleman.

According to Poleman, a contractor working at the Safeway noticed the device in the parking lot behind the store and called officers at 12:37 p.m.

Police arrived shortly after to secure the area and the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office’s bomb squad arrived at around 1:35 p.m., Poleman said.

Poleman said officers did not shut down or evacuate the Safeway after determining that “if the device were to go off it would not be a threat to anybody inside the building,” based on its size.

A nearby massage parlor was the only store in the area temporarily shut down, Poleman said, “out of an abundance of caution.”

At 2:37 p.m., officers reported the device had been disabled and posed “no danger to the public,” according to a social media post.

The incident is currently under investigation, Poleman said.
