Tourism boom in Crested Butte, Colorado

Fishing guides wait for their clients to arrive on the Gunnison River outside of 3 Rivers Resort in Almont, Colorado on July 28, 2021. For years Crested Butte has sought more visitors through promotion of the areas scenic beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities. Now, however, the number of visitors to Crested Butte and Gunnison county has outstripped what the town can support. Sidewalks along Elk Avenue are jammed with people, trailheads and trails are crowded, serving times at restaurants are measured in hours not minutes. To help the situation the Gunnison-Crested Butte Tourism Association has stopped promoting the town. (Dean Krakel, Special to The Colorado Sun)
